Stress-Related Hair Loss – Getting to the Root of the Problem

It is normal for people to lose about 100 strands of hair per day. After all, an average scalp has over 100,000 hair strands so there is not much for you to worry about. However, when you notice that there are a lot more than a hundred strands falling off of your head each day, this may not be your regular everyday hair fall.

As you know, a persons health and well being can be seen through his/her hair. If you are physically and emotionally healthy, it shows in your hair that is radiant and shining. If there is something that is troubling you, it may become dull, lifeless, and may even begin to fall out due to the overproduction of traumatized sebaceous glands.

With this said, it is true what some people say that stress can lead to hair loss. Excessive physical or emotional stress which include but are not limited to those that are associated with injury, surgery, and illness can cause two types of hair loss namely: telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. In the first one, the hair stops growing, falls out 2 or 3 months later but resumes on growing within 6 to 9 months. The other type, on the other hand, involves a white blood cell attack on the hair follicles, and is characterized by baldness that occurs in patches.

Stress is something that we need to keep us going. In moderate degree, it is actually vital to our everyday

life, however when stress demands too much of our energy, it can take a toll on our physical health including the health of our hair and scalp. The best possible way to treat a stress-related hair loss is of course to get to the root of it by identifying the stress and then work on to remove it in your life.

Work and money problems are the top primary causes of stress. Lack of exercise, poor quality sleep, poor dietary intake, and fatigue are other factors that contribute to stress. Fortunately, coping with stress is not as difficult as most people would like to think. In fact, with these simple tips, you can work your way towards healthier hair by learning how to cope and deal with stress efficiently.

1. Getting rid of worries in your head – Worrying too much can cause stress and anxiety. By trying to ignore a problem for a while before attempting to solve it can enable you to relax and get back to the problem with a less anxious and worried mind.

2. Relax and have fun – Go out with friends, meet new people, go to a party, get a massage, have your toenails painted, get your hair done, shop, read a book, listen to soothing music, exercise, talk on the phone, eat great but healthy food, and try on new clothes-these are few of the many things you can do to cheer yourself up.

3. Exercise – Physical activities like aerobic exercise, sports, yoga, Pilates, stretching and so on can do wonders in relieving your stress.

4. Have a positive mindset – Remember that no life is perfect. Learn to count your blessing and see the brighter side of life. Optimistic people with huge problems experience less stress than negative people with minuscule problems.

5. Eat a proper diet – Foods rich in B vitamins are great for relieving stress and for improving the health of hair and scalp. These foods include green vegetables, whole grains, liver, peas, fish, cheese, eggs, and beans.

Getting to the root of the problem is one way to treat stress-related hair fall. However, if this condition persists, it would be smart to go and see a doctor.
